TRIVIA

  • Bhutan is the only Carbon Negative country in the world as it absorbs more carbon dioxide than it emits, thanks to its extensive forest cover — over 70% of the country is forested.

  • Bhutan was the first country in the world to ban the sale of tobacco in 2004 (though regulations have eased slightly since).

  • Bhutanese citizens are required to wear traditional clothing — the gho for men and kira for women — in schools, government buildings, and formal occasions.

  • Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, is one of the few capital cities in the world without traffic lights — traffic is directed by white-gloved police.

  • The takin, a goat-antelope native to Bhutan, is the country’s unique and quirky national animal.

KNOWN FOR

  • Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang): Perched on a cliff 3,120 meters (10,240 ft) above sea level, it’s one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks and pilgrimage sites.

  • Dzongs – Fortress-Monasteries:
Bhutan’s iconic architecture includes massive fortress-monasteries like Punakha Dzong, combining administrative, religious, and cultural functions.

  • Gross National Happiness (GNH):
Instead of GDP, Bhutan measures progress through Gross National Happiness, focusing on spiritual, environmental, and cultural well-being.

  • Bhutanese Cuisine: Ema Datshi, a fiery dish made with chilies and cheese, is the national dish — Bhutanese food is generally very spicy!

CLIMATE

  • Bhutan experiences four seasons across distinct Three Climate Zones, all heavily influenced by the dramatic changes in elevation of the Himalayas and monsoon winds:

  • Southern Bhutan (lowlands)
    Climate: Subtropical
    Temperature range:
    Summer: 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F) and winter: 15°C to 26°C (59°F to 79°F). High rainfall during monsoon (June–Sept).

  • Central Bhutan (valleys like Thimphu, Punakha, Paro)
    Climate: Temperate
    Temperature range:
Summer: 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) and winter: -2°C to 15°C (28°F to 59°F). Cool, dry winters and warm summers.

  • Northern Bhutan (mountainous)
    Climate: Alpine
    Temperature range:
Summer: 5°C to 20°C (41°F to 68°F) and Winter: Can drop below -10°C (14°F). Snowfall is common especially in harsh winters.
